This club is especially for grounded, mature, African- American singles who enjoy good food, good conversation and good company. Events are hosted at locations all over the city where we dine, dance, discuss and more. We are always open to new ideas for events. Suggestions can be posted on the discussion board or emailed to the Organizers.
I felt bewildered, not aroused — but judging from the expressions of the people around me, this mass apology seemed to be a turn-on. This was my introduction to flirting, tantra-style. The evening, which took place in a big space at the yoga studio, had a distinctly New Age vibe. The corners of the room were lined with tea lights, and in the middle of the room was a large patchwork quilt. The women were given bags of beads to wear around our necks, while the men were given empty pouches to wear. Guy explained that, if we were interested in one of the men, we should place a bead into their pouch at the end of each encounter.

In fact, I had just met this man. And we were in a brightly lit yoga studio in the Lower Haight with a dream catcher on the wall and a statue of Buddha in the corner. Roughly 40 other singles were paired off around us, all engaged in the exact same awkward declaration — yes, strangers had been instructed to pledge their unconditional devotion to each other. Despite its name, these are clothing-on, nonsexual events. This was an evening I had signed up for as a revolt of sorts, to combat the monotony of internet dating.
